Youth who punched Spanish PM sent to a juvenile detention facility
Suspect’s lawyer says the 17-year-old’s parents are “ashamed” and “overwhelmed”
The 17-year-old who punched the Spanish prime minister in the face on Wednesday will be sent to a juvenile center for a maximum of six months, a Pontevedra court has decided.
He will serve this time in a closed detention facility to be determined by the Galicia regional government, the news agency Europa Press reported.
The family’s lawyer said the suspect’s parents were “honest, hardworking people from Pontevedra”
The court may at any time repeal the measure or extend the detention period, according to the Galicia regional High Court.
The assailant, a high-school student reported to have ties to hooliganism, underwent an evaluation by a psychologist and a social worker before the judge issued his decision.
The family’s lawyer, Jorge Cubela, said his parents – a Chamber of Commerce employee and a workplace counselor – were “ashamed” of what their son had done.
In statements to the media, Cubela said the youth’s parents are “honest, hardworking people from Pontevedra.”
“This is overwhelming for them,” he added, insisting that the young man has no ties to any political party or organization, and that the attack was not politically motivated.
