Record evictions show human face of Spain's crisis
Repossessions soar as almost five million swell the unemployment lines
Close to five million people in Spain were out of a job at the end of June, the main reason why a record number could also be out of a home due to a failure to service their mortgages or pay the rent.
According to figures released Friday by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), the number suits filed for evictions in the second quarter hit 16,464, an increase of 21.2 percent over the same period a year earlier. The previous record was in the first quarter of this year at 15,546, an increase of 36.8 percent.
The number of families thrown out onto the street through foreclosures or non-payment of the rent in the first half of this year is almost the same for the whole of 2009 when they amounted to 33,918. The record annual increase was last year, when 47,809 eviction proceedings were executed.
The biggest increase in evictions in the second quarter took place in the region of Murcia, where they rose by over seven-fold, followed by Extremadura. The biggest number of evictions was in the region of Valencia at 3,297.
